CafeMom Writing Challenge: A Letter to Your Dumb Teenage Self

Amy came up with this week's CafeMom Writing Challenge: Write a letter to yourself as a teenager.

Dear Teenage Amy (myself Amy, not the Amy I just linked to, oh never mind),

You. Must. Chill. (Do the kids still say chill? Well, probably not, but I'm guessing you haven't figured that out yet.)

You must calm down. You must be yourself. I realize you probably have no idea who you are, so you're flapping around wildly between straight-A student who pretends not to be a straight-A student so the cool kids will like her (hint: they don't, but that's okay, because HOO BOY, did their lives ever peak in high school and go downhill from there)...to a girl who is too shy to talk to anyone but is a gigantic ham in the drama club. The good news is that you aren't really any of these things in the end, but the sooner you figure that out, the happier you'll be.

Calm down. Eat something. Write something. It turns out you aren't really that shy. It turns out you are kind of funny. It turns out that straight-As in high school don't really matter much at all. Sleep with John and Brian but not Josh or any of those other boyfriends whose names I don't even remember. Man, quit with all those boyfriends. Being single at 17 does not equal a lifetime of unlovable loneliness. Again, with the calming down.

This sucks to say, but yeah. It turns out high school really will be the worst time of your life. You aren't being dramatic, even though your mom thinks you are. This also sucks to say, but moms aren't always right. You'll figure that out on September 30, 2005. Or thereabouts. Which is when life goes from "great" to "really really really awesomely great."

Love,
Amy

P.S. If one day, hypothetically speaking, you happen to own a REALLY EXPENSIVE cell phone, please don't keep it in your back pocket.
