Prepare to Get Schooled

You may have noticed that the ClubMom blogroll is a tad heavy on the homeschooling blogs right now. And if you're anything like me, you might see that topic and go, "Bwah?"

Or you may not. Because I am learning that...(wait for it)...not everyone is like me! That is probably a good thing, I am thinking.

Anyway, the topic of homeschooling is getting a lot of coverage lately, both here at ClubMom and across the mommyblogosphere.

Elizabeth at Table For Five wrote a very interesting post about some of the more alternative, less structured homeschooling methods (methods, incidentally, that I've seen in use at quite a few private and exclusive preschools in my area). Her questions and reservations are ones that I think a lot of us have about homeschooling. (Well, besides my own reservations that I think Noah is already smarter than me. Also: math.)

Melissa from The Lilting House addressed her style and methods in this post, which inspired lifeinagarden to similarly embrace the idea of "Tidal Learners." And Dana from Since Eve wrote a great post about the socialization question, which I think a lot of people ask because it's an underhanded way to tell a homeschooling parent that they are turning their children into anti-social, overly-sheltered hermits. (Gotta love those mommy drive-bys, right?)

Anyway. I'm not going to add my two ignorant cents here, because I honestly know next to nothing about homeschooling. I didn't even know there were so many homeschooling blogs (look, they have carnivals! no fair!). I'll just be reading along with everybody else -- and learning a few things along the way, I'm sure.

P.S. Oh, and while not DIRECTLY related to this topic in any way, I can't help but mention that newly-launched ClubMom blogger Kristen (also of Motherhood Uncensored and the previously-pimped Cool Mom Picks) was homeschooled growing up. Be afraid, people. Be very, very afraid.

P.P.S. I kid! I kid! I love Kristen more than my luggage.

» Why Homeschool? from The Lilting House
I always appreciate when someone who isn’t familiar with the real whys and hows of homeschooling takes the time to try to get a handle on the subject. That’s what Elizabeth of Table for Five has attempted to do, after [Read More]

Thanks for the mention, Amy. I'm preparing myself for a tsunami of commenters. Already I seem to have struck a few nerves with my apparently ignorant public-schooled opinions. Does that mean I've arrived? Hee hee!

Hey Amy & Elizabeth! I enjoyed both your posts and responded over at The Lilting House. Nothing a homeschooler loves more than a good discussion...except maybe chocolate.

Loved Elizabeth's post - I think I was one of the first commenters. Now I need to get back over there and see what has transpired!

One of my frequent threats to my kiddo is, "HEY, KEEP THAT UP AND I'LL HOMESCHOOL YOU!"

Molly immediately corrects whatever aberrant behavior she's conducting at that moment.

All that being said, I respect the homeschooling population because I know I could never, ever do it myself.

I done homeskoold mah sun for too yeers and I thank he done jus fine. Uh cors, he dint get no soshalizin an he now setts small aminals afire, but nobody's kid's purfeckt.

I cannot tell you the amount of BAD BAD BAD mommy-drive-by's I was on the receiving end of when we decided I would homeschool my son for first and second grade. As if it's up to anyone else but my husband and me how we choose to educate our children! Ugh! We no longer homeschool him, but I feel those 2 years were some of the best of our lives so far. I look forward to reading more about this topic on other clubmom blogs.

I was homeschooled from grades 6 - 12 (and graduated with decent grades) It's not the right choice for most people, or their kids for that matter.
It was definitely the right choice for me - and somehow I came out of it a successful human being with very few hermit tendencies :-)

Hey Amy & Elizabeth! I enjoyed both your posts!
